Even after endless nights of hard frost in the Northwoods, these beautiful wildflowers are still hanging on, pushing forward with light lilac-colored petals when all other flowers have hibernated for the fall.

They look so fragile, yet are so strong willed and resistant to freezing temperatures.

There are other wildflowers in the area that are doing the same, and I have noticed that they too have a “purple-ish” color to them.

Sure, Mums are the favorite perennial of the season, abundant in an array of colors.  Mine are usually a very deep purple (I see a trend here), with a brownish tinge to them, but they are not present this year.

They lost an unfortunate battle with the mad weedwacker (aka:  Rick) this spring, and never quite recovered.  Yes, he feels terrible about it.  I guess I hadn’t properly educated him on the differences of weeds and foliage in my flower gardens.

Thankfully these beauties are in an area that doesn’t get disturbed by evil lawn implements.

At least for now.

Fall has come to the Northwoods.

But unlike the last couple of years where it was immediately cold and rainy, we have been blessed with warm temperatures in the 70’s.

The cool mornings of frost, fog and general chilliness melt away a few hours later from the warming rays of the sun and light breezes that are fragrant with Autumn’s scent.

You know that scent, right?  It carries a slight metallic tinge that comes from the trees and plants shedding their colorful leaves, leaving the ground covered in a blanket of the most lovely colors of the season.

Living up here for the past 11 years, I know all too well that this weather is just one last ditch effort by Mother Nature to show off the spender of our area, and I have certainly been taking advantage of it when I get home from work.

Doors and windows get opened to let in that fresh fall air; spending time outside either cleaning up the yard or just relaxing with a good book on the deck; getting in some last minute grilling.

But mostly just taking time to relax and know that soon enough the hibernation season we call winter will be upon us.

But I don’t want to think about that just yet.  I’ll keep my focus on the beautiful colors that surround me this time of year and soak up the wonderful weather that we are fortunate to have right now.

I hope that you are able to do the same.

I don’t know where I come up with these things.  My mind all of a sudden gets triggered by something someone has said, or done, or it just get’s board and reverts back to my youth.

For whatever the reason, the show H.R. Pufnstuf slammed into my brain and it brought back a show from my childhood.

Back in the day (circa 1960s) there were some great Saturday morning shows on, one of which was a quirky one that involved a shipwrecked boy (Jimmy) who has a magical flute.

Gonna stop right there because I loved that flute.  To me, it was the whole plot to the storyline.  It even had a name:  Freddy.

And it was “alive”.  I mean, it could talk.  And think.  And make music.

Talk about talent!

OK, so Jimmy and Freddy somehow are able to take a boat ride to an island where everything is alive:  talking trees, singing frogs… even the houses, candles and clocks were right up there on the evolutionary scale.

Oh, and the Mayor of this magical island was a psychedelic dragon (that would be Pufnstuf for those not as old as dirt like I am).

But the plot thickens (it always does):  there is an evil witch that wants the magical flute.  My kids will be familiar with this name:  Wilhemina W. Witchiepoo, or more affectionately known simply as Witchiepoo.

She had some great sidekicks:  Orson Vulture, Seymour Spider and (my favorite) Stupid Bat.

Sid and Mary Krofft must have been on the best acid trip of their lives when they thought up this show!  But to us kids, it was just another wonderful adventure that we would have all loved to take (minus Witchiepoo, because that would have put a total bummer of being around living mushrooms, trees and books).

And let’s not forget about the Vroom Broom.  I would totally take one of those.

It sure beats the one I ride now.

Happy Birthday, Christine!

(Circa 2004)

Wow, where did the time go?

It seems like just yesterday I was teaching you to ride a bike, and then kissing your knee when you scraped it against the stone wall that lined the sidewalk.

No, it was just yesterday when I saw you board the bus for your first day of Kindergarten.

Wait a minute, it was just yesterday that I watched you graduate from High School.

Maybe its all those yesterdays combined that bring back some wonderful memories and remind me of the beautiful woman you’ve grown up to be.

Happy birthday, sweetheart, I love you very much!

I was sifting through the gazillions of pictures I have on my computer, and came across these from 2003.

This was so typical of our dog Tipper.  He just wanted to be a part of whatever someone was doing.

He loved giving kisses…

and he would always be accepting of a scratch behind the ear.

That’s one wonderful thing about dogs – they are loyal and loving, and it doesn’t take much to make them happy.

I guess cats aren’t all that different.  Leave an empty box lying around and they’re just as happy.
