Due to Alexis’ birthday this past weekend, we didn’t get a whole lot done on the “shed”, but some progress was made.

There are so many little details that Rick does to make it a sound structure, that my help isn’t always needed.

But when the time comes, I’m raring to go and not afraid to grab those power tools and get the job done.

We actually work quite well as a team, and I got to learn more about those little details and what their purpose is in the overall structure of the building.

And I like to stand back after another section is complete, like the deck we did on Saturday, and say “Hey, we did that!

You know, like Michelangelo  after he finished the Sistine Chapel.

Kinda.

8 years ago today I was stirred from my slumber in the wee hours of the morning by a telephone call and the following statement:  “Mom, we’re heading to the hospital.”

I woke up Rick and called Chris to get over to the house because Nichole was in labor.  I swear that girl was here in 10 minutes flat (which is amazing since it’s a 20 minute drive) (OK, not so amazing when I think about how Chris drives).

Driving 2 hours to a hospital at 2 am is not exactly ideal conditions, because that is the social hour for deer around these parts.  Since I was gonna spend a couple days with the new parent’s, Rick drove separately and I had Chris with me to look out for any critters that may look like they were gonna bolt into the road.

I’m happy to say that we made it down with no incidents.  I had expected Rick to beat us there (he graduated from the Indy 500 school of driving), but I neglected to tell him about the road construction on the normal road we take that detoured to Egypt and back, so he wandered in an hour later.

But all was well and good because it was another 10 hours before we welcomed Alexis Marie Ziegler into the world.

Was that really 8 years ago?  It just doesn’t seem possible!

Before I know it, this little girl is going to be going on her first date, learning how to drive, and graduating from High School.  And on each of those milestones I will think back to the day she was born and the excitement she gave all of us with her first cry.

And I’ll probably cry a little bit myself.

:::

Happy Birthday, Alexis Marie!

Grandma & Grandpa love you very much.

What happens when you bring Rick’s family together ?

You get some of the best blog fodder in the world, and this time I captured it on my camera.

Saturday’s main even:  jumping rope.

First, let’s have the girls show how it’s done.

And then a few simple instructions for the first victim contestant.

Ready… set…

And we have liftoff!

Woah!  Nice jumpin’ there Logan!

Can this guy get some air time or what!

I think he stopped there for 5 minutes to show off.

But then again, it was pure poetry in motion.

Or perhaps a new dance that I’ve never heard of.

The girls were really cheering you on!

And Nichole was laughing so hard I don’t know how she was able to swing the rope.

To show his son how it’s really done, Albert took charge to give us his moves.

Andddd…..

He’s made the first jump!  (I think he even surprised himself.)

Looking good.

Bummer!  Well, you had a heck of a run.  I think I counted at least 5 rounds.

Here, let Alexis show you how it’s done.

Great job girlie, you’re a natural.

Thanks guys for giving me such great material for my blog.  You’re great sports and I love ya both.

Next time we get together maybe I can talk you into hopscotch.

Better start practicing now.

When we take trips to see family, it always involves a long car ride, and so far traveling out to see Rick’s folks is the winner in terms of time spent in the vehicle.

So I decided to break down the weekend into some meaningful numbers.  After all, I am an accountant and numbers are my life.

This is sad is so many ways.

Alrighty, here we go:

33 = Hours we were away from home.

10 = Hours spent on the road driving.

5 = Times we stopped for bathroom breaks/food/gas.

423 = Miles driven.

3 = Number of card games going on at any given time.  (This would include cribbage because it involves cards.)  (Don’t argue.)

7,592 = Calories consumed by yours truly.  (And I enjoyed every one of them.)

414 = Pictures taken.  Uffda!

6 = Times I had to tell someone to stop talking/chewing gum during a family photo.

8 = Evil looks given by Calie because she was not in the mood to have her picture taken.

4 = Guitars played by nephews and niece in a fantastic concert!

What do these all add up to?  Memories that will last a lifetime.

Rick & I ventured to Mini-SO-ta this past weekend to see his fam and celebrate his Mom’s 75th birthday.

I swear to all that is bacon and butter that this woman does not look anywhere near that age.

Nor does she act it.  She is funny, silly, nutty, loving and all things that make her one of the most amazing women in my life.  The only woman that ranks higher than her is my own Mom, because, well, that’s just the way it works.

And to say that I am blessed to have her as my MIL is an understatement.  Thrilled, happy beyond belief and at times giddy with a side of cartwheels may be more appropriate.  I only hope that one day I can have even a 1/4 of the awesomeness that she has.

You’re one of a kind, girlfriend.

Happy Birthday Georgia!
