Last weekend was very emotional in so many ways.

And the fact that there was also a full moon that weekend made it even more so.

I absolutely love looking at the moon.  And when I saw this, I just had to capture it.

If I had really been thinking, I would have gone out later when it was darker and tried to get more photos.

But Nichole had come down to spend the night with me, so we kinda got caught up with  picking on Corey on Facebook and then playing our online game.

After staying up way to late, we were awoken to this the next morning:

A beautiful blanket of Hoar Frost had descended on the town overnight.

Call me weird if you will, but this is the most magical sight to see.  I have always  loved the sight of frost covered trees.  I can’t explain it…

We took our time getting dressed for the day’s events but still had time to spare before we needed to be at the church, so after making one stop that Nichole requested , we went in search of photo ops.  Specifically frost covered trees.

Thinking that the town park would be a great place to get pics of the trees in all their frozen glory, we headed to the north side of town.  Unfortunately, we had waited too long and the sun had already thawed their branches.

*sigh*

So we headed to the school water tower,  which happens to be a very well known historical spot.

As we were snapping away at said landmark, Nichole found some low-lying bushes that were protected from the sun’s rays.

I wish that this would have turned out clearer.  I loved how the spiderwebs were wrapped around this branch, and spun around the cluster of blossoms.

Nichole is a much better photographer than I am, and I’m hoping that she will share some of her pics with me so that I can let everyone see for themselves what she is able to capture with the lens of her camera (hint, hint, Nichole).

THIS is what I was aiming for!  To get up close and personal with those ice crystals!

We must have snapped pictures for 15 minutes before I realized that I was completely frozen.

Plus, if we didn’t hurry up and get to the church, we would be late.  I hate being late… for anything.  There’s a story behind that.  But it’s a very long story, and will probably make it into another post at some point or another.

Or not.

There’s nothing quite like going back home.

The last couple times that I have traveled back to my hometown have been for funerals, but still that feeling of being in the place that you spent you childhood in somehow forces you to see it from different eyes.  Almost like playing tourist to some new, far off land.

Which is kinda the roll I took on when I went there this time.

Ah, Main Street.  Not many of you around anymore.  The Mom & Pop shops, small movie theater.  It seems to have gotten smaller but still hanging in there.

This is where I grew up, and where my Dad still lives.  We lived a few miles out of town (actually, in between 2 small towns).  Easy access by bike whenever I needed to go anywhere.  As one of my daughters  said, “It seems much smaller now.”  Guess that happens when you get older, eh?

The fields that surround the house used to be farmland when I was growing up, but new neighbors have turned it into pasture for their horses.

I had always wanted a horse when I was growing up, but my Dad said that we didn’t have enough room on our property.  Well, Dad, all you had to do was buy the land around our house and we would have had the room!

Here we have the old chicken coop in the back yard.  When I was young, this building served as a playhouse,  haunted house at Halloween, and home to the rabbits I used to raise, among other things.  The one thing that it never held was chickens (must have been something that the previous owners had before my folks bought it in the ’60s).

I love seeing the girl’s faces light up when they see this old building.

I think that my daughters hold the fondest memories of this building because of their Grandmother.

My Mom always had a great imagination, and she liked to share that with the girls.

Flashback to my childhood:  Every year in early Spring, The Wizard of Oz would be shown on TV , and this was a movie that we never missed (this was back-in-the-day before cable TV and there were only a  handful of channels that we got – yes, I am that old).

Seeing as how Mom loved that movie and with her lovely sense of humor, this was dubbed “Witchy Poo’s House”.

Come to think of it, that was a name on H.R. Pufnstuf too…  but she didn’t watch that… I did.  Hmmmmm.  Think I’ll stay with The Wiz on this one.

So when the girls were young, they would always visit Witchy Poo’s House and Mom would have some grand adventure with them.  She was a good storyteller.

We tried to get inside, but the door was blocked with bags of mulch and such.

Even though they are adults now, they just can’t help themselves when it comes to climbing things.

But doing it in dress shoes probably isn’t the smartest.  Good thing that sisters always help each other out in situations like this.

We discovered this old pitchfork head laying up against a tree.

So, along with a few “discarded” tomato cages, it will find a new home with Nichole.  She seemed to think that she could put them to good use.

Don’t worry Nichole, I won’t tell Grandpa.

I totally love this one simply because I am from the generation that watched this show.  Plus it brought back great memories.  Thanks AL!

Again, to all my friends on Facebook, be forewarned that I may “steal” those witty statements that you make, just to bring a smile to others.

And thank you for being my friend and making me smile.

We survived the epic snowstorm that hammered us for the last 24 hours.  Actually, the heaviest stuff probably lasted 12, but who’s counting.

The wind was whipping around pretty good this morning when I got up!

With gusts in excess of 30 mph, I was kinda worried about the tall trees that we are surrounded by.  They are very prone to falling on power lines.

Luckily, we didn’t have a problem.  (I had us covered anyway.  I had charged the Kindle, Archos Tablet and laptop just in case.  You can never be unprepared up here.)

I was wondering why it was hard to open the door to the deck!

Let me explain why this is surprising to me.  Our front deck is about 3 feet off the ground and has a roof on top of it.  This is from the blowing snow.

This is my snow measuring gauge.

I was up several times last night to see how much we had on the railing of the deck.  At about 4 a.m., after seeing this grow, I knew that we wouldn’t be going anywhere today.

Rick is my hero!  He never complains about shoveling off the deck.  Thank you honey… mwah!

The first measurement we took was in the driveway.

Considering that it is a buttload of snow, it still makes good photo ops.

OK, time to fire up the snowblower!

Paths were made around the whole yard so that we could still get to the sap buckets.

Speaking of sap buckets, remember that one that I showed you yesterday?

This is what it looks like today *sigh* .

And these 2 really took a direct hit from the snow and wind!

As I walked around the yard I took measurements in different areas.

Eek!!

Poor Rick!  He’s had to park his car in the driveway lately because the wood for our new kitchen ceiling is stacked in the garage next to my car.

How much snow did we get?  Really hard to tell.  So, I will just take the average of the 3 measurements and guess around 14 inches.  I’d say that was the most we got in one dumping this year.

It was nice to have a snow day off from work, and it looks like good weather for the rest of the week.

Now we just have to wait for the snowplow to get around to us so we can get out of here for work tomorrow.

I hate to bug you because I’m sure that you’re pretty busy right now with all of the different climates of the world.  Heck, I don’t know how you keep them all straight!  I mean, while one part of the world is having summer, the other is having winter.  Doesn’t that kinda screw up Santa Claus when it comes to Christmas?  I mean, I thought the guy only worked one night a year.

Anywho, I’ll get to my point:  what happened to spring in my neck of the woods?  When I look at my calendar, this is supposed to be the first full day of spring here, and at this moment, we are getting hit with a snow storm.  They are predicting upwards of 12 inches of this cold white stuff with blizzard-like conditions.

For the past 2 weeks you have been giving us some very spring-like conditions where the snow was melting and we could tap our Maple trees for Sugarbush.  They were just starting to produce their luscious sap and I was able to get 3 gallons yesterday.  Now look at them.

Poor babies are getting dumped on with snow.

Tell me, are you and Old Man Winter having a fight?  Is he just not willing to hold up to his end of the bargain when it comes time to end the excruciatingly long, cold, dark winters that we have to endure up here?

Sure, sure, these things are expected where I live.  We are a tough bunch of people that can roll with the punches.  We know that sometimes you throw us a curve ball to see if we can handle it.  Like last fall when you gave us the wind and rain during wild rice harvest that knocked a good portion of the rice back into the lakes, making it slim pickins and a very short season.  Is this going to be the case with Sugarbush too?

Did we piss you off somehow?

We try to do what is right by respecting you and taking care of everything that represents you.  We do our 3 “R”s and offer our thanks when we plant our gardens and reap our harvests in the fall.

I guess we must be missing something.  We will try to do better.

And if you have having a spat with the Old Man, I’ll lay odds that you can beat him.

I have faith in you.

Thank you for listening.
