Rick & I are always happy to help out our grandkids.

And when I got wind that they were collecting plastic caps for an Earth Day project at their schools, I jumped at the chance to help their cause.

What a better place to beg ask for donations than the place where I work.  A mass email went out to my colleagues and donation bins were placed.

And these wonderful people didn’t disappoint!

This lovely caterpillar welcomes everyone with a big smile.

Later on, she will emerge as a beautiful butterfly, full of color and life.

Sure, we weren’t able to provide all the great caps for these works of art, but what we did collect helped re-purpose a bunch of plastic that would have normally ended up in a landfill somewhere, and turned it into something that can be enjoyed by many people for years to come.

I will never look at a plastic cap the same way again.

For Memorial Day, Rick & I took a trip up to

While we were there we stopped at the

to get a few groceries.

When we were done there we went next door to the

to indulge in some java juice and scrumptious Leek and Mushroom Quiche.

With our caffeine levels back to normal and tummies full, we headed east to the

Unfortunately the casino gods were not watching down on us, and we left there a few dollars lighter.

Most of the weekend travelers had headed south earlier in the day, so the trip home was uneventful except for a

that I saw hightailing it across the road.

We dined on

for supper and spent a leisurely evening fighting the reality of having to go to work the next day.

When we drove up to the old homestead, I confided to Rick that I was a little scared as to what we might see.  I even mentioned that I might cry.

We had no idea what had been done to the house so far.  Rick hadn’t had much contact with the Phil, the person who was working on the place getting it ready for the new tenant.

The first indication that there was work being done was this pile of debris on the front lawn.  I glimpsed through the window and saw a bunch of plaster on the carpet.

*gulp*

Phil tried to prepare us for what we were going to see when we walked through the front door.  He knew that we loved this house, and he wanted our approval and input on his progress.

I think I stopped breathing for a minute.

What used to be the front porch was basically gone.  Where there used to be 2 walls and some windows there was nothing but the original framework.

Plaster, lath and barn board lay in neat piles in what was once the livingroom.

Many years ago Rick & I had talked about doing something similar to the house, and it appears that Phil has the same idea.

The home where we raised our children was taking on a new chapter in it’s long life.  It was evolving into something new, but at the same time keeping it’s original character that we loved so much.

I knew this was going to be hard, but I have to have some faith that the end product will be as beautiful as I had envisioned all those years ago.

When we put the place on the market 2 years ago, we knew that it would take the right person to buy it.  They would see beyond all the work that needed to be done and feel the beauty and welcoming that his house held.  It is like a presence that grabs you when you walk through the door.  The same one that I felt 22 years ago and still do to this day.

Next month the new tenant will walk through that door, and I hope that she will feel it too.

What a busy weekend!

Lots of stuff done and miles put on the vehicle.

We had to make a flying trip down to the old homestead on Sunday to empty some more junk out of the garage.  We got to meet Phil, the wonderful guy who is doing some remodeling to the place for the new tenants (hopefully-soon-to-be-owners).

To say the least I was a little shocked at the progress (all good – more on that at another time/day), but he has the same visions for the place that we did when we lived there so I’m hoping for the best.

From there we traveled down to Nichole & Corey’s to celebrate Walker’s birthday.

Presents & ice cream cake… win-win in my book!

In what seems to be tradition, on our way back home we stopped at the casino in Turtle. Lake.  They were having their 20th anniversary celebration (and the machines were giving me a little present) and were doing some promos and giveaways.

I turned away from my machine to see this:

I was asked if I wanted to give the *turtle* a hug, so being that I have no shame, I said “sure!”  As my reward I got a free T-shirt.

So to recap the day:

– We put lots of miles on the car

– Brought back stuff that has to go to the recycling center

– Hugs, kisses and birthday cake

– Left a casino with money (and a free T-shirt)

Oh, and we passed 4 squad cars on our way home and never got stopped*.

Yep, it was a good day.

* Now if Rick had been driving, there may have been more of a story here.
