After a wonderful Mother’s Day lunch of ham, potatoes, asparagus, parsnips and  hot-out-if-the-oven bread with a desert of angel food cake topped with fresh strawberries and whipped cream (can I get a *hallelujah* people?), it was off for our nature ride.

And Josh was our driver for this little excursion on Sunday.

Josh, Rick and Daisy went out to get the Gator and trailer to haul us around in.

There were going to be 5 of us going, so we couldn’t all fit in the back.  The trailer that they hooked up was low to the ground, and Roxy put the cushions from the patio furniture in it so we would have a comfy ride.

And no, I didn’t get pictures of it, but Roxy did.  Maybe she’ll share it with me. *hint*

Not much of a view from this angle.

Ah, much better.

I have to tell you, I was a little nervous going over this bridge.  There was only about a foot clearance on either side of the trailer, but Josh was an expert driver and kept a good eye on us the whole trip.

Love that kid!

What hunter wouldn’t be in heaven by having a deer stand in their own woods?

And close enough to home that they could hear the dinner bell ringing.

We used to have a bell like this, but Rick gave it away to one of the firefighters who helped put out the fire behind the house last fall.

OK, moving on.

Low bridge.

They’ve had some pretty good storms around their place the last couple of years that have toppled many trees.  At least they are set for firewood for many years to come!

Who needs a swimming pool when you have a pond that will do just fine?

Yep, I could totally see relaxing here during the summer.

This was a nice surprise to see.  Why?  Well, this willow came from a tree that we have at our house in Martell.  Many (like over 10) years ago, they took several branches from one of our trees and introduced them to their property.  Unfortunately, this little guy is the only one that took root and actually decided to stick around.

Now here are the critters I mentioned yesterday.  I have never see Sandhill Cranes up close and personal.  These things are huge!  Georgia was willing them to come closer to us, but they didn’t comply.

Actually, I’m not sure I would have liked them much closer, but it still would have been cool.

As we came back around toward the house, I was able to get a better view of all the rock gardens that Roxy has.

Dang, she puts my piddly rock garden to shame!  So many wonderful perennials that will soon be blossoming.

Just look at these gorgeous Hyacinths!  Heck, mine haven’t made it past the “peeking their noses out of the ground” stage yet.

*sigh*

Thank you Roxy, Bob & Josh for your hospitality during our short visit.  We’re hoping it won’t be another 10 years before we get down to your house again.  Actually, now that we know how long it takes to get there, I can guarantee that it won’t be.

Mother’s Day found Rick & I traveling down to Black River Falls to visit his folks, who were at his sister Roxy’s house.

As always when we travel south of the homestead, we enter some beautiful country that is teaming with wildlife.

I always consider it a good sign when we are met with an Eagle along the way.

Rick spotted this hawk a couple of trees away.

Must be camera shy.

2 1/2 hours later we reach our destination.  They have a beautiful house that they built on 40 acres surrounded by ponds, trees and lush meadows.

But do you think that I would have remembered to get a picture of their house?  Nope!

I take that back.  I did get a couple, but they were pretty fuzzy.

So this will have to give you a little snippet of what it looks like.

Oh, that’s Roxy taking a picture of us getting ready for a tour of the grounds in their Gator.  (I’m saving that for tomorrow.)

Meet Vern.

This guy had a wonderful view of the property from the 3 season porch off the back of the house.

I could seriously live in this room.

It looks like  Georgia is willing to share her coffee with him.  Actually, she’s trying to get him to talk.

And does he ever!!

Rick had to see how far he could get with him.  It was pretty funny until Vern took a peck at him.

Even Kitty had to get into the act.

Yes, the cat is named Kitty.  At least it’s easy to remember.

He is so handsome, but not very sociable, I’m afraid.

Unlike Daisy, who is the sweetest thing I have seen in years. She is an Airedale mix that Roxy rescued, and she could not have found a better home!

I could not resist capturing this old washtub that she had on the porch.  And I found out it is still functional!

I love this photo of Roxy and her Dad!  And Daisy too.

This dog is totally devoted to Roxy.

This young man is Rick’s nephew Josh.  I was so happy to see that he was home to visit his Mom this weekend.

But here is the real reason we came.

I think I scare the hell out of this woman whenever I come near her with my camera.  But how can I resist?

I like to think that she has to be the most perfect Mother-in-Law that anyone could ask for.  Actually, I take her up a notch and put her right up there with my own Mom.  Rick and his siblings are very blessed to have these two people as their parents, and I’m so happy whenever I get to spend time with them.

Tomorrow I’ll share with you pictures of their homestead.  I was really happy when we came across some critters that I had never seen before.

But you’ll just have to wait until tomorrow to find out what they were.

Each year my daughters give me a call and we wish each other a Happy Mother’s Day and talk about what our plans are for our special day.  Usually, all we want to do it veg out or maybe spoil ourselves with something that we don’t normally do.

Well, this year Mother’s Day came a day early for me.

Yesterday, as I was all sweaty and dirty in the yard fighting mutant weeds, Rick comes home and walks back to the garden.  We chat for a moment and I hear those immortal words, “Honey, I did something today.”

Uh oh.  This can only mean one thing:  he bought something.  Usually it’s not a small something either.

So I put down my pruning sheers, take off my gloves and turn around to see him standing there with a boyish grin on his face and his hands behind his back.

Well, this is going to be good, I thought.

The next thing I know he is producing a small box from a bag and getting down on one knee (remember, I’m amongst dirt and leaves here) and opens up a box to reveal this:

My Mother’s Day/20th Anniversary present.

1/2 carat tw Marquise set diamond ring.

I certainly didn’t see that one coming.

This man spoils the hell out of me!

So after some hugging, kissing and love talk, we enter back into the reality that he needs to go back to the shop and finish some work.  But before he does, he gets the mail and brings me a box and some cards that are addressed to me.

Cards from both of my daughters and a little framed heart from Nichole with the phrase “For a love like no other, I thank my Mother.”  Yeah, my kids like to make me cry.

Nichole also sent me this cut little magnet for the refrigerator.  I couldn’t have said it better.

So how will I be spending today?  Rick & I will be going to see his Mom at his sister’s house.  It’s a bit of a hike, but he wants to give her his Mother’s Day present in person.  He’s such a good son.

Thank you Rick, Christine and Nichole for letting me know how special I am to you.  I love you all!!

Christine & Erik will be getting married in August.  I can’t remember the exact date since she hasn’t sent out invitations it has been changed several times.  So unless it is written in stone, exact, for certain, only then will it be permanently etched in my brain.

You can guarantee that the invitation will be front and center on the refrigerator as a countdown to the big day.  This is where we put every event that is important in our lives.  Doesn’t everybody?

And I’ll also put it on my calendar at home, at work and on the my Outlook calendar at work since I’ll be taking the day before off for the rehearsal dinner.  No worries, I won’t forget.

When they came up on Easter, she brought along her wedding dress to show me.  I thought that was awful nice that she wanted to have me look at it and see all the beautiful detail that it has to it.

I took many pictures of it.

But I’m not going to share them since I’m not sure if Erik a) reads my blog, or b) has seen the dress yet.  And I wouldn’t want to spoil anything for him, so I’m am playing it on the safe side.

Sorry, you’ll just have to wait until August.

Along with the dress came a folder that held all of the other fun stuff that comes along with planning a wedding:  the reception quotes.

Here is where the big money gets spent.

Well, ya gotta have a cake.

And look at every possibly combination of costs associated with the food and drinks.

I think that deciding on the menu was one of the hardest parts for them.

But I must say that I love how she marks her possible choices.

Wonder if she gets that from anybody I know.

Rick had the need to get out and about yesterday afternoon, and wanted me to come along.

As we were tooling around town, he turned into the parking lot of the movie theater to see what was playing.

Well, naturally my eyes fell immediately on this*.  This movie was news to me since I don’t generally follow what is hitting the theaters unless it really intrigues me, and I haven’t seen any trailers for this being splashed across the television screen.

As you can probably guess, the real reason that it caught my attention was the name in big, red letters.

Personally, I think that these eyes make a much more profound statement.

However, I don’t think that my Thor and the true God of Thunder have much in common. My version hides at the first sight of strangers and is afraid of storms.

But he’s definitely more handsome.

Or I could simply be biased.
