It’s a blustery, rainy day in the Northwoods.
But I’m grateful that it is rain and not “S”.
I will be waiting for the May flowers to start showing up soon.
Yay! We made it!
We made it through the week. I consider that something to smile about.
Even though it has been a crappy, cold and snowy week in my parts, Fridays always put me in a good mood.
So I will try to get you in a good mood by sharing something that my local radio station plays every Friday. It is the old George Jones tune “Finally Friday,” but with a twist.
Crank up the volume my friends and have a great day!!
(The video* graphics aren’t the best, but I just play it to listen to the song anyway.)

I tend to pick on my girls. In a good way. And they know that they can do the same. We always joke and pick on each other and call each other “brat” (or another certain “B” word… use your imagination) and it is always in jest.
To me, my daughters and I have a very good relationship. Something special, I think. We can talk about anything we want, good or bad, and there will be no judgment. When they were young, the best way to let them know that they had done something wrong was to tell them that I was disappointed in them. When that happened, they were crushed. And when they excelled in anything, it was *high fives* and praise up the wazoo.
Each one of my daughters have things that they tend to do very well. Christine is a fabulous cook and has made dishes with parts of an animal that I would not even dare to venture into even touching.
Nichole has the ability to craft beautiful quilts. She’s made many over the years for her kids, friends having babies, and Corey’s kids. Unfortunately, I have never been the recipient of one of these prized blankets.
Every time she talks about making one, I always slip a “hint” about how much I like the color of hunter green, or what the colors of my bedding are in the summer where one of her quilts would be perfect. I’ve even gone so far as to slip in the old “boy, I sure wish that I had one of those” comments.
And always her reply was that she would get to one for me soon, she just had to get others done or that she hadn’t found the right pattern/materials yet.
But as all Mothers can attest to, we have the ability to *know* when something is going to happen. Am I right? Huh?
So you can only imagine how surprised I was when she presented Rick & I with this when they came up for Easter!
It is our 20 anniversary present (which isn’t until June), but she said she just couldn’t wait to give it to us. (You think that my incessant *hints* had anything to do with it??)
Of course, when I saw the box (which she decorated in fabric used in the quilt) I knew what was inside. But I didn’t know what it would look like. Can you say awesome?!?
Thank you Nichole, for giving us this wonderful gift that I can’t wait to use. You are a top-notch seamstress!
This beauty also gives me the excuse to purchase new summer bedding to put it on (real heartbreak there, I tell ya).
If anyone would like to see more photos of the pattern and gifting session, stop on over to Nichole’s blog and view the full details. While you’re there, give her some *high fives* for a job well done.
Really, I did.
April 26th, to be exact.
But it appears that another joke is being played on us, because yesterday it “S”d. Again. Big, moisture laden flakes of “S”. (Remember the rule??)
Umm… excuse me, Mother Nature, but don’t you remember Sunday? Clear, sunny skies, temperature in the 60s? Warm enough to be outside doing yard work and our lawnmower starting on fire?
Oh, how about Monday when we got to 68 degrees. That was gorgeous!
I know, I know, whatever you throw at us right now will not stick around for long, but seriously?? End of April here!
OK, I will just have to deal with this by going to my happy place and remember the pictures I took Sunday when I noticed that my crocuses were starting to bloom.
And the moss that lays like a beautiful carpet on our lawn was a rich, beautiful green.
And… can anyone tell me what exactly this stuff is that is on the tree?
I’m guessing that it is some type of scaly moss… ? I’m pretty sure it’s not fungus because there is no moisture content to it at all. Just flaky stuff.
I just love how this rock is being wrapped by the moss around the bottom of this tree.
I’m reminded of the old saying “April showers bring May flowers.”
Apparently that’s not applying to my neck of the woods this year.
Easter Sunday was spent doing some yard work while waiting for Chris and Erik to arrive. They had other family doins about an hour away, so we had time to get outside on such a gorgeous day and putz.
Rick took the lawn tractor out and hooked up the leaf sweeper to it to get the rest of the fall leaves and twigs off the yard while I built up my raised garden beds.
I finished my work and came in the house to fold some laundry and Rick followed shortly thereafter with the welcoming phrase “Did you see the lawnmower on fire?”
Ummm… what!?!
Now, I had heard the outside spigot being turned on but didn’t really give it a second thought until I was met with these words.
Apparently it had been making some sputtering noises as he was going around the yard, and he was just heading to the edge of the property to drop off the final load of debris and the thing just shut down.
He noticed some smoke coming out from underneath the hood, lifted it up, and sure enough, there were flames.
So he ran to the back of the house, filled a bucket with water, and in those few seconds returned to find the whole front of the machine in flames.
Lovely.
We’re not sure what exactly started it, but you can be darn certain that this spark plug wire took a direct hit (or was possibly even the culprit).
We bought this machine 9 years ago, and it has been a real trooper considering what we have put it through.
Now we need to figure out what our next move is: Replacement or repair. Or Rick’s other option: Convert it to electric. (He was already researching this last possibility within 30 minutes of the fire.)
No matter which option is chosen, the fact is clear that we need a machine of this type around the homestead. Not just for mowing the lawn, but for hauling heavy loads in the small trailer.
Or taking grandchildren for rides around the neighborhood when they come up to visit.
